American small businesses, 23 million and growing, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, account for 54 percent of all U.S. sales. The administration’s Web site, sba.gov, also reports small businesses added 8 million new jobs since 1990; during the same period, big business cut its work force by 4 million.

So what’s on the horizon for 2013 as the year progresses?
